There's these new shoes that I want! Want, want, want! I've never even tried them on - I saw them on ZombieRunner and I've been craving them ever since. For probably a few months now. But I don't have enough miles on my old shoes to justify getting new ones. So I try to make deals with myself. You can order those new shoes as soon as your old shoes get to a certain mileage. Not necessarily your end miles because you'll want some time to break in the new ones. Not that running shoes require a lot of break in time. However these new shoes are slightly flatter - allowing more heel drop than a standard running shoe so it is probably a good idea to start them in on slow, short runs.

Oh, new gear, how do I want thee? I think that I often equate new gear to speed or better fitness, which is obviously a flawed logic. The cool factor is another reason for new gear though!
Sometimes I do run or ride more or faster for a short while because of the excitement of new gear. So it's a slight boost but usually wears off after about a week or two.
I've always admired your determination to wear out your gear before turning it in for the upgrade. I gotta say though, 850 miles on a pair of shoes -- that's incredible. My ankles, knees, bones, joints would never tolorate that from me!
Thanks, Anon. 109 miles to go and I'll have three pairs in the 1000 Mile Club - I'll post a group photo! I can't recommend it for everyone. And I used to retire shoes much sooner. But as the years went by and the foundation grew it became less necessary. You'll see it, too - let me know how many miles you're putting on your shoes when you've been running for 5 years, 10 years, 15…
It's true that only when I contemplate the alternative ie that my old is adequate can I mitigate the need for the new. I admit to indulging in the buying and then waiting to use to figure out whether I truly needed and most times then I can return and not feel victim to immediate rewards and consumerism:) I guess I should contemplate applying that degree of patience and delayed gratificatiion in other areas of my life too.
Thanks, Julia. I like the word Adequate for this scenario. Good to ask ourselves: is what I already have adequate. If yes, do not click "proceed to checkout"...
